Admission Essay Examples

Admission Essay Examples I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I don’t feel I’ve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I can’t do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I don’t know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another person’s outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I don’t necessarily have to find validity in everyone’s viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. “These people are just confused,” Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, “Let people be who they are.” Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. What I’ve realized though, is that I don’t have to sacrifice all for one. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge I’ve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond “potatoes! Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I don’t have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasn’t going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. In discussions, I put forward my ideas with every bit as much conviction as my classmates. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically they’re the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant.

The Portrayal of Women in The Hound of the Baskervilles - Literature Essay Samples

Women in the nineteenth century were often considered less than men. Consequently, they depended on the men in their lives, usually their fathers or husbands. Nevertheless, there were women who did not have a husband or father to depend on, yet still had to trust the other men in their lives to take care of them. This dependency often ended in men betraying the women who trusted them. The Hound of the Baskervilles illustrates how women in the nineteenth century were taken advantage of, even when placed in very different situations. Mrs. Barrymore, one of the workers in the Baskerville Mansion, portrays a woman in a good marriage. Her husband, Mr. Barrymore, refuses to reveal her secret to Sir Henry and Watson and in doing so, illustrated his loyalty to his wife (Doyle 151-152). Mrs. Barrymore, however, is still taken advantage of by the men in the book. Watson and Sir Henry ultimately take advantage of the information she gives them about Seldon (Doyle 151-152). Although they gave an excuse for using that information in order to chase Seldon through the moore (Doyle 168), the excuse is ultimately in vain after they agree to go along with the Barrymore’s plans (Doyle 169). Mr. Barrymore even admits after mentioning the subject to Sir Henry, â€Å"I didn’t think you would have taken advantage of it Sir HenryIndeed I didn’t.†(Doyle 168) This is in reference to Sir Henry’s betrayal of Barrymore’s wife. Mrs. Barrymore represents women in good situations, with a loyal husband , and how they are still betrayed by the men in society. Beryl Stapleton is in a very different situation than Mrs. Barrymore. Although she is married, she is in a very unhappy marriage. In this marriage she not only has to hide the fact that they are married (Doyle 208), but her husband also beats her in order to keep his murder plans secret (Doyle 255-256). When she finally comes to a realization, she cries out, â€Å"I could endure it all†¦ as long as I could still cling to the hope that I had his love, but now I know that in this also I have been his dupe and his tool (Doyle 256).† She admits that she was his tool and was taken advantage of him, and when she leads the detectives through the Grimpen Mire to capture her husband, she is portrayed as happy and eager for her husband’s downfall (Doyle 258). This illustrates the extent of betrayal she experienced in the marriage and her happiness to finally be free. She represents the women in unhappy, untruthful marriages, and how these women are taken advantage of by the men they depend on. Laura Lyons was in a rare situation in which she was already betrayed by her husband, who ran away, and her father, who refused to take her back into his household (Doyle 175). She, thus, depended on the other men who lived on the moore, such as Sir Charles and Stapleton, who helped her set up her own business (Doyle 176). Consequently, she is later taken advantage of by one of the men she is dependent on Stapleton. He portrayed himself to her as a love interest (Doyle 207-208) and lied to her, telling her he would marry her all while hiding the fact that he was already married (Doyle 239). After hearing this, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson decide to use this information in order to draw more evidence out of Laura Lyons (Doyle 255). This scheme is successful and another betrayal is discovered. Using the lies he had told her earlier, Stapleton urged Laura Lyons to meet Sir Charles on the moore, but later he convinces her to miss the appointment, ultimately resulting in the murder of S ir Charles (Doyle 239-240). Laura Lyons is betrayed by men all throughout her lifetime and is an example of how even when it seems like there were no men left to take advantage of a woman, she can still be left betrayed. The three women in these novels lead very different lives, however they are all left in similar situations. Rather it is being betrayed by someone for information, such as Mrs. Barrymore and Laura Lyons when involved with Dr. Watson, or being taken advantage of for someone else’s personal gain, such as Beryl Stapleton and Laura Lyons by Mr. Stapleton. This portrayal of women highlights this advantages men had in the nineteenth century and how they interacted with women, even when they unintentionally used them. It is evident throughout the novel and, although these are over exaggerations, can be found in examples of real life nineteenth century women. Work Cited Doyle, Arthur Conan. The Benefits Of College Internship - 709 Words

Testing out a career before spending thousands of dollars on an education in a field that was not what was expected would be nice. That opportunity does exist: it is an internship. Internships are positions taken by students in order to meet a school requirement or to gain experience in a field of interest. Internships usually have participants that are students in college or graduate school. Interns are not designed to run other people’s errands but instead to discover one’s passion (Downey par. 19). Most colleges require students to declare majors by the beginning of their junior year, so s tudents should complete an internship prior to that time. Knowing whether or not a job is fitting will permit those to change their majors prior to spending a lot of time and money on an education they will not use. Many will say education will never fail someone. Learning new concepts and ideas can only build minds. People never stop learning throughout life. While internships are advantageous, the main purpose should not be to determine if a career field is admirable but to gain overall work experience. It is known that college graduates receive more job opportunities than those with just a high school diploma (Luhby 3). While gaining knowledge is never futile, wasting thousands of dollars preparing for a career the person will never use is impractical. To rebut that education will never fail an individual is absurd, but taking an internship to gain an understanding of a career and discover what interests an individual possesses, could potentially lead to a better investment towar ds a future career. Conflict And Josie Film Analysis - 1196 Words

The victim, Josie, in the film, faced rape, intimate partner violence, and sexual harassment encounters. Incidentally, one of the major focuses of the film concerned sexual harassment, but I would be remiss if I did not give equal time to the horrendous acts of violence experienced by the victim. The rape experienced was forcible and statutory in nature, and is a recognized social problem, but the shaming by her parent, brought the rape back to a personal problem. Then the intimate partner violence led to a similar response that somehow the victim caused the assault by her actions. The Odyssey and The Pearl Loyalty Essay Example For Students

The Odyssey and The Pearl: Loyalty Essay Loyalty to another person or to a cause may be an admirable trait, but it can lead to either positive or negative consequences. In Homers epic The Odyssey and John Steinbecks novel The Pearl there are characters that show great examples of this trait. Penelope in The Odyssey and Juana in The Pearl are the most obvious, although there are many. Penelope stayed loyal to Odysseus while he was on his twenty-year journey and Juana stayed by her husband through his time of distress. Penelope stayed loyal to Odysseus while he was on his twenty-year journey. To ward off suitors that were beckoning for her hand, she made them a promise that as soon as she finished weaving a gift for her father, she would take one of their hands in marriage. Nightly, unbeknownst to the suitors, she would unravel her work, so that she could remain faithful to Odysseus. Also, Penelope promised her hand to the suitor who could meet a test. Penelopes test was to string Odysseus bow and then shoot an arrow through the eye of twelve ax handles. Penelope knew that only Odysseus could accomplish this task. By doing this, she avoided having to marry one of the suitors. Staying loyal to Odysseus brought about positive consequences to Penelope. She was reunited with her beloved husband Odysseus. Kinos wife Juana stayed by her husband through his time of distress. Although it was her belief that the pearl was an omen of evil, she loyally stayed at her husbands side. Juana remained loyal to Kino even after he had savagely beaten her. She knew that she had brought it upon herself and it was her place to accept the beating. Also, Juana vowed not to leave her husbands side when he decided to flee from the town after murdering one of the townspeople. She made the treacherous journey with her husband across a desert trying to outrun the men that pursued them. Negative consequences were the outcome of Juanas loyalty to Kino. Her loyalty caused her to lose all that was common and dear to her, including her only child. Loyalty to another person or to a cause may be an admirable trait, but it can lead to either positive or negative consequences. Penelope stayed loyal to Odysseus while he was on his twenty-year journey and Juana stayed by her husband through his time of distress. Penelope refused to remarry while Odysseus was on his long absence, and Juana never left Kinos side. Loyalty is a trait found in most humans, and if used in moderation can have very positive consequences. Category: English .
